Too small

We’re having a record breaking heat wave.  Lovely.  Especially on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, as if it wasn’t hot enough normally.

Outside, we have some choices.

  1. Too damned hot.
  2. Really too damned hot.
  3. Ridiculously damned hot.
  4. Almost tolerable but swarmed by mosquitoes.
  5. Almost just hot but swarmed by gnats.

Obviously, I’m not thrilled.  We are essentially stuck indoors, dogs, cats, us and all.  We have been for days, and the realization has sunk in.

This place is too small.

Small is great, small is what we’ve been aiming for, but damn, I want a place we can have a recliner…at least one, two would be nice so we could BOTH sit at the same time.  It would be nice when one of us is having one of those restless nights if we could lay down in an alternate location, avoiding keeping the other one awake with our up-and-down attempts to sleep.  It would be nice if we had something to choose between bolt-upright and lying prone!

I’d like desks, so we’re not forced into the situation of continually occupying the dinette AND the bedroom with computers.  Desk chairs now seem like an impossible luxury, comfortable and soft.

I’d love an outdoor area that was protected from weather and the mosquitoes, but the cost of purchasing an awning with side walls right now is absolutely out of reach.  A more permanent structure won’t work in our location, and even one of the EZ-Up canopies with screen side walls is an expense I can’t really justify for 100 square feet of outdoor space in scorching hot temperatures.

Maybe its the heat, but right now, I’ve had enough of this experiment and am perfectly willing to call it quits.  I want enough room to move around indoors, to stretch out on a sofa or chair, a normal kitchen, etc.  I don’t want to know how small of space is efficient, I want to know how large of a space we could possibly afford.

I want a refrigerator with a big bag of ice in it, for an unending supply of tall, cold, icy drinks.  A huge crisper drawer that I can fill with spinach and lettuce and tomatoes and cucumbers…and feast on salads.  I want an oven big enough to bake something besides a pancake in!

Oh, what I’d give to have a king-size bed again, with room to stretch out without bumping walls or GM even when there is a large dog lounging on it too.

Let’s hope the temperatures drop, my senses return, and my optimism is re-activated.
